Summary—Sensibility, Intelligence, and Patterning in Time

This diagram summarizes the differentiation phase of Patterning in Time with a special emphasis on how underlying sensibilities change. Note in particular how, while in each stage one intelligence predominates, each also has less prominent, but no less important manifestation at every creative stage.

For example, Creative Systems Theory proposes that we can think of body intelligence as layered, each layer ordered by a different creative principle.  These layerings are pertinent to both Patterning in Time and Patterning in Space differences.  It calls these layers (we can think of them either in time or as a sequence from inside out in bodily structure):  The “creature body” (the body as experienced within Pre-Axial dynamics—body intelligences time of greatest influence), the “energetic body” (the body as experienced within Early-Axis dynamics), the “visceral/muscular body” (the body as experienced within Middle-Axis dynamics), and the “physical body” (The body as experienced within Late-Axis dynamics.)  The integrative intelligence of Cultural Maturity is paralleled by an integration of bodily realities. In a similar way Symbolic/Imaginal Intelligence can be thought of as evolving through animistic imagery with Pre-Axis, myth with Early-Axis (nuministic imagery—Symbolic/Imaginal Intelligences time of greatest influence), legend with Middle-Axis (legends have morals), and fantasy with Late-Axis (Mickey Mouse). In a similar way this differentiation can be applied to both Patterning in Time and Patterning in Space distinctions.
